Adelaide Motor Garage: Website Plus Their Own Workshop App

Adelaide Motor Garage is an independent workshop in Windsor Gardens that has been going since 2021, looking after every make and model. When we started, they had two problems that looked unrelated but turned out to be the same problem: the business was running on software and a website that someone else owned.

The Website Was One Page Doing Six Jobs

Online, the whole business lived on a single page. That is fine until you think about how people actually search. Nobody types “mechanic”. They type “logbook service Windsor Gardens” or “pre purchase inspection Adelaide” or “car air con not cold”. Every one of those is a different question. A single page cannot be the best answer to all of them.

So we grew the site from one page to six, with a dedicated page for logbook servicing, car air conditioning, pre-purchase inspections, brake repairs and diagnostics. Each one is written to answer that specific question properly, each carries its own structured data so Google can read the service, the location, the opening hours and the FAQs. Each can then rank on its own merits.

The Booking Form That Does Something

Most booking forms on workshop websites send an email. Someone reads that email, then types the details into whatever system runs the shop. Two chances to lose a job, one to type it wrong.

Theirs writes the booking straight into the workshop system. It arrives as a real entry in the diary, not a message in an inbox waiting for someone to notice it.

Then We Built Them Their Own Workshop System

Behind the counter, the shop was running on third-party workshop software. It cost money every month. After years of use it still did not do several things the way they actually work. That is the usual bargain with off-the-shelf software: you rent it, you fit yourself around it and you never stop paying.

We built them their own instead.

How a job actually moves through it

A booking arrives, either from the website or typed straight into the diary, then becomes a job card. The mechanic picks it up on his phone, starts the job, takes photos as he works and marks it finished. The office gets an email the moment that happens. The invoice then goes out with an itemised tax invoice PDF attached, generated automatically rather than assembled by hand.

Customers, vehicles, parts, suppliers, quotes, payments and staff timesheets all live in the one system. Their existing job history came across with them too, so nothing had to start from zero on day one.

The parts that matter to a workshop

  • It runs on a phone like a normal app. A mechanic under a car is not walking back to a desktop to update a job
  • The office finds out immediately. No walking out to the workshop to ask whether the blue Hilux is done
  • Invoices leave properly. Itemised, GST correct, attached as a PDF, without anyone retyping a line
  • It belongs to them. No monthly licence, no feature they are waiting on someone else to build

What This Means If You Are Not a Mechanic

The specific thing here is a workshop system. The general thing is more useful: a lot of small businesses are paying every month for software that does most of what they need, then quietly working around the parts it does not do. Those workarounds are usually where the time goes.

Custom is not automatically the answer. Sometimes the off-the-shelf tool is genuinely the right call and building your own would be daft. But when a business has been fighting the same limitation for years, until the workaround has become “just how we do it”, that is worth pricing properly rather than assuming it is out of reach.

If that sounds like your business, the conversation is free. Give me a call on 0400 025 978 and I will tell you honestly whether it is worth building.
