How to Choose the Right Computer for Your Small Business

Choosing the right computer for your small business is not as straightforward as grabbing whatever is on sale at the local electronics store. The wrong choice can cost you in productivity, repairs and early replacement. Here is how to make a smart decision.

Laptop or Desktop?

If you work from one location most of the time, a desktop gives you more power for your money. They are easier to upgrade, run cooler and typically last longer. Mini PCs are a great option if desk space is limited.

If you need to work from different locations, meet clients onsite or travel, a laptop is the obvious choice. Look for something with at least a 14-inch screen and a battery that lasts a full work day.

How Much Should You Spend?

For general business use (email, documents, web browsing, accounting software), a computer in the $800 to $1,200 range will serve you well. If you work with large files, design software or multiple monitors, budget $1,200 to $1,800 for something that will not slow you down.

Avoid the cheapest options. A $400 laptop might save money upfront, but it will frustrate you within a year and need replacing within two.

Key Specs That Matter

Processor: For most business tasks, an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 is the sweet spot. You get solid performance without paying for power you will never use.

RAM: 16GB is the standard for business use in 2026. 8GB is workable but you will notice slowdowns with multiple browser tabs and applications open.

Storage: An NVMe SSD is non-negotiable. It makes everything faster, from booting up to opening files. 256GB is the minimum, but 500GB gives you comfortable room for growth.

Operating System: Windows 11 Pro is recommended for business. It includes BitLocker encryption, Remote Desktop and better security features than the Home edition.

Do Not Forget the Peripherals

A computer is only as good as the setup around it. Budget for a quality monitor, a comfortable keyboard and mouse plus a decent webcam if you take video calls. These accessories directly affect your daily comfort and productivity.

Buy From Someone Who Supports You After the Sale

Big box retailers sell you a computer and wish you luck. When something goes wrong or you need help setting things up, you are on your own. Buying from a local tech provider means you get setup, data migration and ongoing support included.

I supply computers from Leader Computers with full setup and ongoing support. Everything arrives ready to use, configured for your business, with your data migrated and your applications installed.
