Where to Get Barcodes for Your Products in Australia

You have made a product. A cafe wants to stock it, a gift shop asked for a wholesale list and the local grocer said “just send it over with barcodes”. And that is where most makers get stuck, because nobody tells you where barcodes actually come from.

Where Barcodes Come From

The barcode on a retail product is an EAN-13, a thirteen digit number rendered as those black bars. The official source in Australia is GS1 Australia. A GS1 membership gives your business its own number range, which every major retailer accepts without question. There are also cheaper resellers online selling one-off numbers. Those can be fine for markets and small stockists, but some big retailers only accept GS1-registered numbers, so it pays to choose based on where you want your product to end up.

A Number Is Not Enough

Owning a barcode number is step one. The product still needs the barcode rendered correctly at print quality, placed on a label that survives a curved bottle or a tiny jar, then loaded into your online store and point of sale so a scan actually rings up the right product at the right price. Miss any of those steps and the stockist is typing codes in by hand, which is exactly what barcodes exist to avoid.

What I Do

This is a service almost nobody advertises, so people end up piecing it together from forum posts. I handle the whole run end to end:

  • Work out whether GS1 membership or a smaller option suits your retail goals
  • Assign EAN-13 numbers across every product and size variant
  • Render print-quality barcodes and place them on your labels
  • Design the labels themselves if you need them, print-ready with crop marks
  • Bulk-load every variant into Shopify or your point of sale
  • Build wholesale price lists your stockists can order from

For Adelaide Hills Organics that meant 81 product variants barcoded and loaded into Shopify in one pass. The full story is in the labels and barcodes case study.

What It Costs

Depends on the size of your range, so it is quoted per job after a quick chat. Small ranges are quick. Big ranges are mostly careful spreadsheet work, which I happen to enjoy.
